John Murray writes of the stunning revelation found in the Bible that we have not one, but two, divine intercessors on our behalf, even now, before our Father in heaven:
"...the children of God have two divine intercessors:
Christ is their intercessor in the court of heaven...
while the Holy Spirit is their intercessor in the theatre of their own hearts."
It provides deep (and I hope an abiding) comfort to know that my King, Jesus, prays even now on my behalf at the right hand of the Eternal Father for all that is happening in my life, all that is surrounding me, all that I must face in my circumstances. All that is without me. And (!), that the Holy Spirit prays even now, dealing with all that is within me, the swirl of my emotions and the ups and downs of my thoughts and the weakness of my heart.
And so it is for you as well, child of God.
What amazing grace, and what peace.
Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save* those who come to God through him. [Jesus] lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf. (Hebrews 7:25, New Living Translation)
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers* in harmony with God’s own will. (Romans 8:26-27, New Living Translation)
