Every Tuesday night in our home, I have the humbling honor of meeting with a group of young men to talk about Jesus, and his Gospel, as we spend time together in the Sacred Writings. With God's help, over the last few years, I've done what I can to help them grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. And they have done the same for me. It's been hard at times.
It's been beautiful.
This week, we had two new young men join the circle. Their stories are similar. They both come from a place of brokenness unlike anything the rest of us have experienced. They are both recent believers. And as they shared their stories of lives filled with sin and difficulty and pain, but then of the redemption and forgiveness they have found in Jesus, I sat stunned again by the glory of salvation. Thanksgiving leapt from my heart.
What joy to sit at this table, and hear these stories! What privilege to be a small part of their walk with Jesus! That night, as they spoke, the place around the table was holy ground.
As I talked it over with my wife later that evening, I told her, "This is why we are here. It's why we do what we do. It's for those men. It makes everything worth it." And there are so many more out there. So many in our community who are just like them, with lives filled with sin and difficulty and pain, but have not yet found the redemption and forgiveness and transformation available in Jesus Christ. Many have yet to even hear the story.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20, English Standard Version)
Maybe you read these words from our King, and have tired of hearing them. May it not be so for you, or I! Beloved, we are Plan A of the Father, Son, and Spirit for the salvation of the world. We are those who have the privilege and high calling to march into darkness with light, to rescue those who are perishing by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. We are the delivery system to come into contact with lost souls, bringing them into contact with the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. We will then get to tell, and hear, the stories.
What greater adventure could there be?
And if that were not enough, consider, please consider, there is no Plan B.
There is no other way this will happen.
We have been delivered from darkness to light to proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of the darkness. If we do not, how will they hear? How will they know? Your neighbors. Your friends. Your co-workers. Your community. Who else will reach them?
Please, don't think I'm something I'm not. I'm still learning. Learning to obey Jesus in this. It is only by grace I got to sit at that table Tuesday night. But I want the same for you. I want you to sit at a table, and hear someone testify, because you shared the Gospel.
Let's do this.
