I Experienced Two Visions This Morning

10.3;0;The Israelites Crossing the Jordan I often awake weak and frail of faith. So it is no small thing to me when God so graciously breathes life back into a listless heart. He did so this morning with two visions of his power of over a binary compound that occurs at room temperature as a clear, colorless, odorless, tasteless liquid; and freezes into ice below 0 degrees.

The first vision occurs when a people, wandering in the desert because of their lack of faith in God to overcome the wicked people of the land he had promised to give them, now enters that land under Joshua's leadership, 40 years hence:

So when the people set out from their tents to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and as soon as those bearing the ark had come as far as the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest),

the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap very far away, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off.

And the people passed over opposite Jericho. Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.  (Joshua 3:14-17, English Standard Version)

The second vision happens when some disciples get into a boat with God himself, and face a challenge to their trust in their leader:

One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.”

So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”

And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?” (Luke 8:22-25, English Standard Version)

Two visions of power.

One God.

He is worthy this morning of our trust.

Who frees us from fear and stabilizes our faith.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.  (Joshua 1:9, English Standard Version)
