The Way of the Master

cosimo-rosselli-sermon-on-the-mount Have you ever taken a moment to think about why it is that you do what you do?

Maybe you're thinking, "That is so New Year's Eve." But here we are, into the fourth week of 2013, and I'm still doing exactly that. Reflecting on my life. Thinking about what it is that I do. Assessing my priorities. Considering the look of my calendar. Taking stock of how I manage resources. Contemplating my relationships. You get the idea.

As I do so, I'm feeling tensions, and I've got Jesus to blame.

It's all this hanging out with him that is doing it. Watching how he lives. Seeing how he interacts with others. Looking at what it is that he does. Getting a sense of his priorities. Considering the look of his calendar. Taking stock of how he manages resources. Contemplating the relationships he enters into. Reflecting on his life.

Hanging out with Jesus (by way of Luke's his-story) gives one a sense of his values. Of how Jesus sees and defines the world. And, just a hint here, but it's not usually the way we see the world. Listen to the way he talks to those whom he has called, chosen, and named:

Blessings Pronounced

20 Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said,

“God blesses you who are poor,

for the Kingdom of God is yours.

21 God blesses you who are hungry now,

for you will be satisfied.

God blesses you who weep now,

for in due time you will laugh.

22 What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man. 23 When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way.

Sorrows Foretold

24 “What sorrow awaits you who are rich,

for you have your only happiness now.

25 What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now,

for a time of awful hunger awaits you.

What sorrow awaits you who laugh now,

for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.

26 What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds,

for their ancestors also praised false prophets. (Luke 6:20-26, NLT)

That is a topsy-turvey view of things. A reversal-of-fortunes kind of view of things. And it is the way he describes the life of those who follow him.

Which brings us to other questions. How is that you've decided to live the life you are living? What are your values? Why is it that you do what you do? Do you find that there are things that you've, sort of, just fallen into, and your not even sure why you are doing them anymore?

Jesus preaches in the passage above, and through the remainder of Luke 6, of a life of intentionality. A life shaped into the way of the Master. It's where we'll be at Calvary for the next few weeks, and I'd love for you to join us in person, or on-line, as we enter the story and listen to Jesus.

See you Sunday.
