God Is There!

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you. (Psalm 139.7-12, ESV)

Because of my temperament, this is one of my favorite portions of Scripture. What I mean by that is I am inclined to doubt the powerful, constant presence of the Father. David is so helpful to me in this Psalm, for he steps into my skin and deals with my doubts. He thinks the things I would think, considers places that would put me in peril, imagines situations where I would find myself alone.

And he knocks down every one of them with truth about God.

  • There is no place I can go where the his Spirit will not be there.
  • There is no destination where he has not already arrived.
  • It doesn't matter how high I rise, or low I go.
  • Traveling to the very ends of the earth does not risk his leading or hand-holding.
  • He will light up the darkest corner of the universe.

And has not God said this to us?

“I will never fail you.

I will never abandon you.” (Hebrews 13.5, NLT)

And listen to the promise of the Son, sounding so much like his Father...

And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28.20, NLT)

Oh what a comfort, are truths from and about our awesome, Triune God!
